In indirect questions the subject comes before the verb

In a direct question we put the auxiliary verb before the subject. In an indirect question we put the auxiliary verb after the subject.

  • Why doesn’t she listen to me?
    (direct question – auxiliary verb/doesn’t – subject/she)
  • I wonder why she doesn’t listen to me. (Indirect question)
    (indirect question – subject/she – auxiliary verb/doesn’t)
  • What does she mean?
  • I can’t figure out what she means.

We don’t often use a question mark after an indirect question.
