Direct Questions

A direct question is a sentence that asks a question and ends with a question mark.

  • What is your name?
  • How old are you?
  • What is your favourite team?

There are three main types of direct question:

Yes/No questions

The reply is yes or no.

  • Are you going out tonight?
  • Did you send the parcel?

Wh- questions

They begin with a question word.

  • How
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Which
  • Who/whom
  • Whose
  • Why

As in these examples:

  • Where are you going?
  • What time is it?

Choice Questions

They contain the connecting word or.

  • Would you like tea or coffee?
  • Will you go to Croatia or Greece this year?
