Correct word order in sentences

The correct word order in a simple English sentence is subject-verb-object (SVO).

If a sentence has a time or place then the word order is subject-verb-object-place-time.

  • I went shopping in Liverpool yesterday.
    (subject/I – verb/went – object/shopping – place/Liverpool – time/yesterday)

The time can also be put at the beginning of the sentence with no difference in meaning.

  • Yesterday, I went shopping in Liverpool.
