Sentences Mini Course Part 1

The best way to avoid mistakes is to be fully aware of them. In this two-part mini course we’ll look at the most common mistakes made in writing Sentences and how to correct those sentences.

There is some flexibility in the construction of sentences in English, but if you are unsure of the possible variations then follow the standard Correct word order in sentences.

Many students start their sentences with and or but. This gives us the question Can you start a sentence with a conjunction? It also gives us a follow up question How many conjunctions in one sentence? The use of commas with conjunctions is looked at in When to use a comma before and or but, and Use commas when adding extra information.

Adding extra information to a sentence is also looked at in When to use which or that.

Using short forms is definitely a plus when writing.

Incomplete sentences are called Fragments and need to be avoided. The Sentence fragment test will show you how.

Run-on sentences also need to be avoided.

The answer to the question Can you end a sentence with a preposition? ends part 1 of this mini course.
