When the main clause is in the past tense

When the main clause verb is in the past tense, the dependent clause verb must also be in the past tense.

  • She asked if I am dressed.
    (main clause verb/asked/past – dependent clause verb/am/present)
    She asked if I was dressed.
    (main clause verb/asked/past – dependent clause verb/was/past)
  • The teacher knew they haven’t done their homework.
    (main clause verb/asked/past – dependent clause verb/haven’t done/present)
    The teacher knew they hadn’t done their homework.
    (main clause verb/asked/past – dependent clause verb/hadn’t done/past)
  • He told her that he will come.
    He told her that he would come.
