Sympathy or Empathy

Sympathy is to understand another person’s feelings, show them compassion and then try to help them.
Empathy is sharing another person’s feelings as if they were your own. It is a deeper feeling than sympathy.

  • He showed much sympathy to them on the death of their mother.
  • The government showed little sympathy towards the protesters.
  • She has a lot of empathy for jobless people as she is also looking for a job.
  • I feel empathy when I see the pain in your eyes.
