Everyone, everybody or every one

Everyone and every one are pronounced the same but have different meanings.

Everyone and everybody talk about all the people in a group. It thinks about the group as one person. It only talks about people.

Every one talks about each person or thing in a group, It thinks about the group as lots of different people or things. It can talk about people or about things, and it’s always used with a singular verb.

  • Everyone was looking at her.
    (The group was looking at her.)
  • With everybody gone, she could enjoy the silence.
  • I failed every one of the exams.
    (There were many different exams, and I failed them all.)
  • She has sent a letter to every one of her friends.
