Present Participle

A present participle is formed from a verb and is a word used as an adjective or for verb tense. All present participles end -ing.

Here it is used as an adjective:

• The laughing clown.
  (adjective/laughing)

Here it is used for a verb tense:

• The clown was laughing.
  (verb tense/was laughing)
