How to self-study English

You will need to study between 200 to 250 hours to go from B2 to C1.

It doesn’t mean 200 hours of lessons. It means 200 hours of actively making your English better including lessons. My students usually go from B2 to C1 in about 12 months. That would be 2 x 60-minute lessons which is around 90 hours of lessons in 12 months. The other 2-3 hours a week is spent doing some or all of the following:

  • speaking in English at every opportunity including to yourself
  • recording and evaluating your speeches for clarity, accuracy and fluency
  • watching films and TV without subtitles
  • reading a lot
  • listening to podcasts
  • following English language social media accounts in subjects that interest you
  • using every opportunity to write in English: e-mails, note taking during meetings, your To-Do List, your shopping list, etc.

The idea is to do as many of your daily tasks that you would normally do in your mother tongue but do them in English instead.

This will develop good habits and make improvement much quicker.
