Alternate or Alternative

Alternate as a verb means to go from one to another, and then back again. As an adjective it means every second one or every other one.

Alternative suggests a choice is being offered.

  • Her mood alternates from happy to sad and back to happy again.
  • Bugsy works on alternate weekends – usually the first and third in every month.
  • The production workers were offered alternative work schedules.
