Indirect Object

The indirect object of a sentence is the receiver of the direct object.

  • Gary kicked the ball.
    (direct object/ball)
    There is no indirect object because there is no receiver of the ball.
    Gary kicked the ball to Steve.
    (direct object/ball – indirect object/Steve)
    Steve is the receiver of the direct object/ball.
  • Edyta baked some tasty biscuits for Gary.
    (direct object/biscuits – indirect object/Gary)
  • He gave his mum and dad a wonderful Christmas present.
    (direct object/Christmas present – indirect object/mum and dad)
