Passive Sentence

In passive sentences the subject does not do the action of the verb. In passive sentences the subject receives the action of the verb.

  • The apple was eaten.
    (subject/apple – the apple did not do the action)

In passive sentences we can show the doer of the action using by.

  • The apple was eaten by Adam.
    (subject/apple – the action was done by Adam)
  • Rupert was driven to the airport.
    (subject/Rupert – Rupert did not do the action)
  • Rupert was driven to the airport by Christopher.
    (subject/ Rupert – the action was done by Christopher)

A passive sentence is the opposite of an active sentence.
