The with countries and cities

Don’t put a, an nor the before the names of cities and most countries.

  • I was born in the Liverpool, but now I live in the London.
    I was born in Liverpool, but now I live in London.

If the name of the country or city uses a normal word such as united or republic then use the before it.

  • the United Kingdom.
    (united and kingdom are both normal words)
  • the Republic of Ireland.
    (its full name includes the word republic, so use the)
  • Ireland.
    (its common name doesn’t include the word republic, so don’t use the)
