An adverb is a word that gives extra information about a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

  • They run quickly.
    (The adverb quickly gives extra information about the verb run.)
  • They are extremely quick runners.
    (The adverb extremely gives extra information about the adjective quick.)
  • They run extremely quickly.
    (The adverb extremely gives extra information about the adverb quickly.)

Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective.

  • Quick – Quickly
  • Beautiful – Beautifully
  • Slow – Slowly
  • Gentle – Gently
