Can you forget your English?
The short answer is yes.
Skills and knowledge need to be used, or they’ll be quickly forgotten.
Everyone who has learnt a foreign language knows how quickly they forget what they have learnt when their lessons stop, or they change job and no longer use it. Even a two-week break for a holiday can leave some people struggling during the first lesson back.
How long does it take to start forgetting your English?
A large amount of what you have learnt is forgotten after only six months without use. After three years it has nearly all been forgotten. One reason why your IELTS and TOEFL certificates are invalid after only two years.
Speaking and listening skills, the most used and the most difficult to get, are lost first. Reading and writing skills take longer.
Your skills will be lost quicker:
- the younger are
- the quicker you learnt
- the lower your level when you stopped
Can you prevent the loss of your English?
Using your English skills, even occasionally, can help you slow down their loss.
Try some of these:
- talk to yourself in English
- watch films and TV without subtitles
- read a lot
- listen to podcasts on your way to work
- follow English language social media accounts in subjects that interest you
- make notes in English
- have a 60-minute English lesson once a week with a teacher
