Stative Verbs

Stative verbs describe a state. They don’t describe an action.

  • The soup tastes delicious.
    (state/tastes/opinion)
  • The chef is tasting the soup.
    (action/tasting)
  • Paul feels ill today.
    (state/feels/emotion)
  • Paul was feeling his leg.
    (action/feeling)

No –ing with these common verbs when used in the stative form:

believe, belong, feel, hate, have, know, like, love, mean, need, prefer, realise, remember, seem, taste, understand, want.
