Limiting Modifiers

Limiting modifiers limit the words they modify. The most common limiting modifiers are:

  • almost
  • hardly
  • nearly
  • just
  • only
  • merely

Limiting modifiers are next to and on the left of the word they modify.

  • I almost won £500.
    (almost modifies won)
  • I won almost £500.
    (almost modifies £500)

As in these examples:

  • Only Adam eats chocolate.
  • Adam eats only chocolate.
  • She hardly knows anybody.
  • He just wants to ride his bike.
