Limiting modifiers limit the words they modify. The most common limiting modifiers are:
- almost
- hardly
- nearly
- just
- only
- merely
Limiting modifiers are next to and on the left of the word they modify.
- I almost won £500.
(almost modifies won) - I won almost £500.
(almost modifies £500)
As in these examples:
- Only Adam eats chocolate.
- Adam eats only chocolate.
- She hardly knows anybody.
- He just wants to ride his bike.
