A contraction is a type of abbreviation. There are two types: Contractions with Apostrophes and Contractions from Compressed or Shortened Words.
Contractions with Apostrophes
These are formed by replacing letters with an apostrophe. These contractions are formed either by shortening a word or joining two words.
- don’t – do not
- can’t – cannot
- he’s – he is
Contractions from Compressed or Shortened Words
A contraction from a compressed or shortened word does not have an apostrophe.

- Dr. – Doctor
